Maintaining good oral health is key to having a beautiful smile – something we all want. But it’s not just about looking good. Oral health is integral to our overall health, too. Unfortunately, many of us don’t realise this and don’t take the necessary steps to maintain good oral health. In fact, according to recent studies, more than half of adults in Australia have tooth decay. This figure is even higher for those aged 65 and over. So what can we do to improve our oral hygiene? Keep reading for some tips! Good BrushingHaving a good brushing technique and routine is the number one way of maintaining good oral health. Whether you use a manual or electric toothbrush, make sure you’re brushing at least twice a day for two minutes each time. No slacking off either! Make sure you’re reaching all areas of the mouth, including those hard to reach teeth right at the back. The secret for a good brushing technique is to brush your teeth in a circular motion with a medium amount of pressure, making sure you get the space where the tooth meets the gums. Too much pressure can damage your teeth. We recommend using a soft-bristled toothbrush, hard bristles aren’t necessary. If your toothbrush is starting to look worn or frayed, it’s time to swap it out for a new one! As for your toothpaste, make sure it has fluoride in it. Fluoride strengthens your teeth and fills microscopic pits in the enamel that bacteria can hide in. You only need to use a pea-sized amount, and preferably just spit at the end, no need to rinse! FlossingBrushing unfortunately doesn’t remove all the food particles from your mouth. Between your teeth where the bristles can’t reach, food particles can linger and start to cause cavities and tooth decay. This is where flossing comes in! Flossing gets between the teeth, making sure your whole mouth is clean. Get your dental floss and make sure you clean between every tooth around a few times, staying below the gum line. You should floss every day, preferably before bed when your mouth has less saliva and less protection against tooth decay. Diet and LifestyleReducing your chance of developing cavities starts with reducing the amount of sugary foods and drinks you consume. Sugar stays in your mouth long after you finish eating and drinking, and feeds the bacteria that causes all sorts of dental issues. And we don’t have to tell you that you don’t need that extra sugar! Instead make sure you’re drinking plenty of water. Not only does this keep your mouth flushed and clean, but keeps your mouth hydrated, and the tiny amount of fluoride in the water really does add up to make a big difference in your oral health! Other risk factors for your teeth that are worth avoiding are smoking, chewing hard objects like pens, and not opening things with your teeth such as containers, bottles and cans. You’ve got hands, use them! So, if you want to keep your teeth healthy and sparkling for years to come, here is your ultimate guide. If you have any questions or want some personalised advice, book an appointment with your dentist and they will be more than happy to help. And remember, keeping your teeth healthy is important for your overall well-being – so don’t neglect them.
