What is sedation Dentistry?Sedation dentistry is a procedure where we place the patient in a state of relaxation. We give them medication and allow them to be more relaxed, reduce anxiety and they can get through the procedure more comfortably. Who is Sedation Dentistry suited for?Sedation dentistry is suited for people who are very anxious about dental treatment. That's the main reason most people go through sedation dentistry. However, if you are undergoing extensive procedures, if you have a lot of work done and you want to get it done all in one appointment, it's much more comfortable way to get through the procedure. Are there many sedation dentists in the illawarra? The answer is No, there's not many of us. I am the only one who actually lives in the Illawarra who's able to do the sedation dentistry. So, it's difficult to find. There's a few Sedation dental operators in the Sydney area who sometimes come down to the Wollongong area, but, yeah, it's sometimes a bit more difficult to find. What are the most common questions a parent will ask the dentist? Is it going to hurt? I think it's the biggest one, and the answer to that is almost always no. We use local anaesthetic. We numb everybody up before we do any procedures, so you tend to get through it fairly comfortably. when should a parent bring their child to their first dental appointment?Usually we recommend as soon as the child gets teeth. Now, that might seem a little early, and it's not really pointed at checking the teeth, per se. It's more so allowing the child to get used to the dentist, used to coming to the dentist, used to getting procedures done in the chair and such. So it's moreso building some rapport with the young child. So a few years down the track, if there is a procedure that needs to be done, they can get through that without being too hesitant. are dental x-rays safe for children?Absolutely the dose nowadays, with dental X-rays, especially with the new technology, is extremely low. For example, you spend one day or one hour in the sun, you get more radiation than a dental X-ray. What should i do if my child has a toothache? You ring up and you bring them to the dentist. what happens at a child's first dental appointment?First dental visit, especially if they're very young we just try and build some rapport with the child, understand how much cooperation they will allow. Then we make a note of that, and the next time they visit us, we take it a step further and so on. The post Childrenâs Dentistry appeared first on King Street Dental. Via https://ksdm.com.au/dental/childrens-dentistry/ When might someone require a dental veneer?A lot of times veneers are done for aesthetic reasons. If the teeth are discoloured, had some sporting injuries which chipped the teeth and these chips constantly break and ofcourse they have to be fixed. So a veneer might be an option to do something a bit more long-term and with minor alignment issues, you can use veneers to give the facade that the teeth are aligned. When might someone need a dental crown or bridge?Well, a crown is a full coverage of the tooth. So you may need it if the tooth has been weakend in any way, so if there is a lot of the tooth that is missing, and we are concerned that a normal filling is not good enough, we may suggest a crown. Another reason you would have crown is if you've had a root canal treated tooth. So we need to cover the tooth and seal it to protect the root canal treatment. What is a denture?A denture is a device that allows you to replace missing teeth. It's called a removable device so you can use it during the day and remove it at night when sleeping. It replaces all the teeth in any particular arch. Arch means the top jaw or the bottom jaw. So, it's a pretty cost effective way of replacing missing teeth. What is a dental implant?Dental implant is on the other scale to dentures. It is the best option we have got of replacing missing teeth. It is considered as a fixed option, so you don't remove it. It's always in your jaw and it replaces your missing tooth without you having to constantly remove and replace. The post Types of Cosmetic Dentistry appeared first on King Street Dental. The post Sedation Dentistry for anxious individuals appeared first on King Street Dental. Via https://ksdm.com.au/dental/sedation-dentistry-for-anxious-individuals/ Maintaining good oral health is key to having a beautiful smile – something we all want. But it’s not just about looking good. Oral health is integral to our overall health, too. Unfortunately, many of us don’t realise this and don’t take the necessary steps to maintain good oral health. In fact, according to recent studies, more than half of adults in Australia have tooth decay. This figure is even higher for those aged 65 and over. So what can we do to improve our oral hygiene? Keep reading for some tips! Good BrushingHaving a good brushing technique and routine is the number one way of maintaining good oral health. Whether you use a manual or electric toothbrush, make sure you’re brushing at least twice a day for two minutes each time. No slacking off either! Make sure you’re reaching all areas of the mouth, including those hard to reach teeth right at the back. The secret for a good brushing technique is to brush your teeth in a circular motion with a medium amount of pressure, making sure you get the space where the tooth meets the gums. Too much pressure can damage your teeth. We recommend using a soft-bristled toothbrush, hard bristles aren’t necessary. If your toothbrush is starting to look worn or frayed, it’s time to swap it out for a new one! As for your toothpaste, make sure it has fluoride in it. Fluoride strengthens your teeth and fills microscopic pits in the enamel that bacteria can hide in. You only need to use a pea-sized amount, and preferably just spit at the end, no need to rinse! FlossingBrushing unfortunately doesn’t remove all the food particles from your mouth. Between your teeth where the bristles can’t reach, food particles can linger and start to cause cavities and tooth decay. This is where flossing comes in! Flossing gets between the teeth, making sure your whole mouth is clean. Get your dental floss and make sure you clean between every tooth around a few times, staying below the gum line. You should floss every day, preferably before bed when your mouth has less saliva and less protection against tooth decay. Diet and LifestyleReducing your chance of developing cavities starts with reducing the amount of sugary foods and drinks you consume. Sugar stays in your mouth long after you finish eating and drinking, and feeds the bacteria that causes all sorts of dental issues. And we don’t have to tell you that you don’t need that extra sugar! Instead make sure you’re drinking plenty of water. Not only does this keep your mouth flushed and clean, but keeps your mouth hydrated, and the tiny amount of fluoride in the water really does add up to make a big difference in your oral health! Other risk factors for your teeth that are worth avoiding are smoking, chewing hard objects like pens, and not opening things with your teeth such as containers, bottles and cans. You’ve got hands, use them! So, if you want to keep your teeth healthy and sparkling for years to come, here is your ultimate guide. If you have any questions or want some personalised advice, book an appointment with your dentist and they will be more than happy to help. And remember, keeping your teeth healthy is important for your overall well-being – so don’t neglect them.
The post A Guide to Maintaining Good Oral Health appeared first on King Street Dental. Via https://ksdm.com.au/dental/a-guide-to-maintaining-good-oral-health/ Getting your first filling can feel a little daunting, but it’s really not that bad. Here are the basics you need to know before you go in for your appointment, why you might need one and what you can expect. Why You Might Need a Filling – CavitiesCavities are one of the most common dental issues for Australians of all ages. Cavities are areas of damaged teeth that develop into small holes. This can be due to tooth decay from poor brushing or sugary drinks. If left untreated, they can become deeper and larger, affecting the inner parts of your teeth and causing discomfort, pain and unsightly teeth. They also make it more likely for further tooth decay to occur by providing places for food and bacteria to hide. What is a Filling?Fillings are several types of materials that fill the cavity and prevent further decay. There are several types of fillings available:
Your dentist in consultation with you will decide what is the best material to use for your specific situation. The Process Of FillingsSo you’ve booked an appointment, your dentist has inspected your mouth to determine the best way forward, may be taken an x-ray, and decided you need a filling. What’s next? Thankfully, it’s a simple and effective procedure:
The process usually lasts around 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the cavity and how long the anaesthetic takes to take effect. AftercareFor the next few days, your tooth might feel temporarily sensitive to hot and cold temperatures. This is perfectly natural and will subside after a few days. If it doesn’t, talk to your dentist. To prevent further cavities, it’s important to maintain good oral hygiene (link to Oral Health article). Having regular six-monthly checkups with the dentist will make sure any cavities that do develop are found and addressed early before they develop into bigger problems and cause further damage. Thanks for reading! We hope this post was helpful and gave you a little better understanding of fillings. If you have any questions or would like to book a check-up, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with King Street Dental in Warrawong. We’re always happy to help! Keep reading to learn more about what to expect from the denture process, how to care for your new dentures, and how to get the most out of your new smile! What Are Dentures?Dentures are removable teeth that replace your missing teeth. Their design allows them to be taken out and put back during the day. They are custom made to fit your mouth and are made to match the colour of your natural teeth and gums. There are two main types of dentures: Complete Dentures – This is a full denture that is a complete replacement of your upper or lower teeth, or both. These are used when most of your teeth are already missing. If there are any remaining teeth, these are removed before the denture is made. Partial Dentures – This type of denture is used to fill in gaps when only some teeth are missing. They attach to existing teeth using metal clasps. Your dentist may decide to put a crown over the existing teeth to make sure there is a strong secure anchor for your partial dentures. If you only have a couple of missing teeth, a dental implant or bridge might be a better option. Speak to your dentist before deciding what is the best option for you. How to Use your Dentures? So you’ve been to the dentist, they’ve handed you a nice fresh set of dentures, what now? Well, firstly you might find them a bit odd and uncomfortable. It can take some time to adjust to having dentures in your mouth and using them to eat, drink and speak. You may need a follow-up appointment to make some minor adjustments to ensure a comfortable fit. During the first few weeks, we recommend you wear them all the time, even when sleeping. This will help you and your mouth adjust to them more quickly. During this time make sure you are cleaning your dentures properly twice a day to avoid irritation and unpleasant odours (keep reading to find out how to keep your dentures clean). After the initial adjustment period, you can take your dentures out during the night while you sleep. This lets your gums rest and stay fresh. Denture TLCLooking after your dentures will keep them looking fresh for many years, and keep your mouth healthy. So how do you do that? Here are some tips on how to care for your new dentures:
Dentures can be life-changing. If you’re considering getting dentures, we want to make sure you have all the information you need to make an informed decision. We hope this article has answered some of your questions and given you a good idea of what to expect if you decide to go ahead with treatment. Remember, it’s important to consult with your dentist before making any decisions – they will be able to advise you on the best course of action for your individual situation. If so, you may be curious about mandibular advancement devices (MADs), one of the most common sleep apnea treatments. MADs are small, custom-fit devices that help keep your airway open while you sleep, which can help reduce or eliminate your symptoms. Wondering if they’re right for you? Here we will outline the basics of MADs, including what they are and how they work. Plus, we’ll discuss some of the pros and cons of this type of treatment. Let’s go! What is Sleep Apnea?Sleep Apnea is a serious condition. Air passageways become blocked or restricted which causes sufferers to wake up momentarily gasping for air. Unfortunately, sufferers are often unaware of what is going on because they fall straight back to sleep. Sleep Apnea can be caused by many different factors, including genetics, obesity, sinus issues or oversized tonsils. Some possible symptoms of sleep apnea are:
Sleep Apnea is a serious medical condition that has serious health risks. Some of the things it can lead to are:
Sleep Apnea should not be left untreated! Talk to your doctor if you think you might be suffering from Sleep Apnea. Why Would I Need a Mandibular Advancement Device?A MAD is used as a tool for Continuous Open Airway Treatment (COAT). This is a commonly used device for mild to moderate sufferers of sleep apnea. There are some lifestyle changes that can help as well, such as weight loss, changing sleeping positions and improving health habits like quitting smoking. If your doctor recommends COAT, King Street Dental uses SomnoMed devices for comfortable and effective treatment. Your doctor may recommend other treatments if your sleep apnea is severe enough, so make sure you’ve spoken to your GP about the best treatment for you. The Low-Down On MADsOur MAD device, the SomnoMed, is made in the dentist’s chair. We take an impression of your teeth and have this made into a mould custom-fit to your mouth, similar to a custom mouthguard. These devices work by keeping your airways open while you sleep. This can alleviate sleep apnea and help with other side effects such as snoring. The device is battery and power-free, making it an easy solution that can be taken anywhere, even coming in a convenient carry case. SomnoMed is a great solution as it’s easily adjusted for the perfect fit, making it very comfortable. Unfortunately, like all treatments, some people get better results than others. MADs are effective in 70-80% of patients. If you’re considering a sleep apnea treatment, such as a mandibular advancement device (MAD), our team at King Street Dental can help. We offer a variety of oral appliances to suit your needs and have extensive experience fitting MADs. To get started, book an appointment with us today. Did your dentist mention you might be interested in veneers but not sure if they are for you? Let’s take a deep dive into dental veneers to answer all the questions you might have. What are Dental Veneers?Dental veneers are typically made out of porcelain and they cover the front surface of teeth. Veneers can be used to correct a wide variety of cosmetic flaws in the mouth, including gaps between teeth, chips or cracks in teeth, crooked teeth, or discoloration on tooth surfaces that cannot be treated with whitening treatments. Veneers are thin shells that cover the front surface of teeth. Dental veneer treatment can be completed in one or two visits to our office, depending on the extent of work needed and your dental health history. Dental veneer treatment can also improve the health of teeth by protecting them from further damage. Your dentist might recommend cosmetic dentistry treatments if you are unhappy about the appearance of your smile. Veneer or Crown?Sometimes veneers are confused with crowns. Dental Crowns cover the entire tooth, while veneers only cover part of a tooth surface. The dental crown is used to restore teeth that have large fillings or where a large amount of tooth structure has been lost. Veneers are used to correct teeth that appear too short, discoloured or crooked. Crowns are more suited to teeth that have large fillings or where a significant amount of tooth structure has been damaged. Why Get Veneers? There are many reasons why veneers might be recommended for you. Veneers can help your teeth become whiter and brighter, giving the appearance of perfectly straight and white teeth. Dental veneer treatments will improve how your smile looks overall. Here is a list of some common reasons that people choose to get veneers:
The post What are Dental Veneers and Why You Might Want Them appeared first on King Street Dental. Via https://ksdm.com.au/dental/what-are-dental-veneers-and-why-you-might-want-them/ Dental Implants are dental devices that serve as an alternative to real teeth. They are used to replace missing teeth and improve dental function. These dental implants can be made of titanium, metal alloys or a mixture of metals. Some dental implants require the placement of bone grafting material before they can be placed in your mouth whereas others do not need this procedure. The benefits of dental implants include improved chewing ability, fewer cavities, less tooth sensitivity and more natural looking appearance with time. What are Dental Implants?Dental Implants have been used since the 1960s and are considered a permanent artificial replacement for one or more missing teeth. There are three parts to a dental implant: a titanium screw, a metal abutment and a dental crown. Dental implants can replace single or multiple teeth, and provides a natural look that’s hard to distinguish from your natural teeth. Dental implants can replace one or more missing teeth, and look so natural it’s hard to tell them from the real thing! The titanium screw is incredibly stable, made to last a lifetime. The stability from dental implants means they won’t move around in the mouth, and don’t require changes to any of the surrounding teeth. They are also permanent fixtures, meaning no need for glue or adhesive, or constantly removing false teeth. Why Get Dental Implants?Dental implants are a great solution to dental problems. They can replace missing teeth, making it easier for your mouth to chew and speak well again. Additionally, dental implants have been known to reduce or remove the need for dental bridges that require changing out every few years! With dental implants you won’t be worried about breaking another tooth or dental bridge, making them much more durable than other dental restoration methods. Dental implants can improve your dental health by:
When to Get Dental Implants? You should consider dental implants when you are toothless or have teeth that can’t be fixed by any other dental procedure. If your remaining teeth do not support dental bridges well enough to fix the issue then dental implants may be the best dental restoration option for you. If you have been avoiding dental procedures due to fear, dental implants might be a good choice for you because they are considered much less scary than other dental work! Dental implant surgery is conducted under local anesthesia, so it does not require any sedation or general anesthesia like some other dental surgeries do. Dental implants are typically placed after dental extractions, so don’t worry about losing your teeth again! You could consider dental implants if you have lost one or more of your natural teeth due to an accident, gum disease, illness or injury. Dental implants should only be placed when a person has sufficient bone volume in their jaw for dental implant placement. This is determined by a dental professional following an examination and x-rays.
