If you want a smile that people will notice and love, then teeth whitening may be the right choice for you. Your teeth are one of the first things that people notice about you. They can make or break your smile and leave a lasting impression. In this article, we’ll be covering what teeth whitening is all about, how it works, and why it’s so important to have a bright smile. Teeth whitening is a procedure to remove stains from teeth so they are whiter. There can be many different reasons for teeth staining, but the most common reason is smoking and drinking coffee or tea. Teeth naturally darken as we age because microscopic particles of food stick between teeth and on our teeth’s enamel (the protective outer coating of teeth). Teeth are made up of four layers, the enamel being the outermost layer and is what gives teeth their colouration. These stains on your enamel can be removed with teeth whitening. There are two teeth whitening services offered at King Street Dental: take-home and in-chair. Both work great, and achieve the same result of having a brighter, whiter smile! There are some differences in the method and time scale of these two techniques. In-Chair Teeth Whitening
In-chair teeth whitening is done right in our office and takes about an hour. It is a more powerful teeth whitening that uses a whitening gel that is applied to the teeth. This gel is hit with an LED light for four 15 minute segments. The teeth are then polished in the office, leaving your teeth several shades whiter after just one visit! You can choose to come back for further whitening sessions if you want an even brighter smile! Take Home Teeth WhiteningTake-home teeth whitening kits are available with custom trays which are made at King Street Dental. The teeth whitening solution is activated by mixing your whitening gel with a peroxide activator, which you’ll also receive in the kit. Be sure to brush teeth thoroughly before applying and always use up all of the teeth-whitening solution that came with the kit because it will affect how the teeth whitening works. Once teeth are thoroughly brushed and gel applied, place the custom trays over teeth for half an hour to an hour each day to let teeth absorb the whitening solution. Causes And Prevention Of Stained Teeth
Are your teeth looking a little duller and less white than they used to? Are yellowed, stained, and darkened teeth making you self-conscious about showing off your smile?
If you’re considering teeth whitening to give your smile back its brightness, you should know what causes teeth stains, and what to do to prevent them.
In this article, we’ll explain some ways you can prevent tooth staining at home, as well as some cosmetic dentistry treatments available to help speed up the process.
What Causes Stained Teeth?BeveragesDrinks are one of the biggest culprits out there for stained teeth, with coffee, black tea, and red wine being among the worst of the bunch. These beverages contain dark pigments that stain teeth over time and are difficult to remove.
Try adding milk to your tea or coffee, and drink red wine intermittently. Rinsing your mouth out with water after drinking these beverages can help flush out some of the pigments that get left behind and cause stained teeth.
FoodsSimilar to drinks, many foods contain dark and rich pigments that stain teeth if they’re not washed, rinsed, or brushed away. Among the worst of the bunch include foods that are highly acidic like tomatoes, many types of berries, beets, starchy high sugar carbohydrates, and fruit juices.
SmokingStained teeth are a very well-known side effect of tobacco. Whether smoking or chewing, tobacco is bad for your teeth. Not only does smoking harm the appearance of your smile by dulling and staining your teeth, but smoking also increases your risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and cancer.
Avoiding Regular Dentist AppointmentsDentists have specialised tools that provide a deeper level of cleaning than you can achieve with a regular toothbrush or even an electric toothbrush.
A dental check-up and cleaning remove the tartar and plaque that’s difficult to remove on your own. Dental checkups also let your dentist inspect your mouth for signs of tooth decay and gum disease that can further cause tooth discoloration.
Not Drinking Enough WaterHydration is an important part of removing and flushing away the pigments left on your teeth from food and beverages. Water also keeps your saliva flowing which helps to remove stains from your teeth throughout the day and while you sleep.
Not Brushing Your Teeth Or FlossingEveryone knows that brushing your teeth removes stains and keeps your smile healthy. Why? Because without brushing, the dental plaque that builds up on your teeth causes stains and discoloration along with increasing your risk of tooth decay and gum disease.
You should brush at least twice per day for two minutes per brushing to ensure food and plaque are removed from your teeth.
MedicationsRegular use of certain medications has been shown to contribute to tooth discolouration, especially in developing children. Drugs such as antihistamines, anti-depressants, and blood pressure medications may also discolour teeth. Other medical procedures such as chemotherapy, and even some oral rinses can stain teeth.
Check with your doctor and dentist about the effects of medications on your teeth and oral health.
Aging And GeneticsThe natural aging process can also contribute to tooth discoloration as the outer layer of enamel naturally wears away and becomes translucent, exposing the tooth’s yellow dentin underneath.
Your genetics also play a role in how your teeth naturally appear. Some people are born with lighter or darker, thinner or thicker enamel.
How Can Cosmetic Dentistry Help Fix Stained Teeth? Are you having trouble getting rid of stained, yellowed, dark, or discoloured teeth on your own? A cosmetic dentistry procedure is a great way to brightener and whiten your teeth and give you a smile you can be proud to show off.
Here are a few ways your dentist can help you get whiter teeth.
Teeth WhiteningTeeth whitening is an easy, safe, and affordable way to improve your smile. With Philips Zoom! Whitening, your dentist will make you a set of custom-made whitening trays with a safe and effective whitening gel. Take the whitening kit home with you and whiten your teeth around your busy schedule. You can also opt for in-chair teeth whitening where your dentist applies whitening gel directly to your teeth in 15-minute intervals for a total of 60 minutes. The Zoom Whitespeed LED lamp activates the gel which can be adjusted if you have sensitive teeth. Results are seen immediately after the gel is removed, whitening your teeth with only one session.
Dental VeneersAnother way to whiten your teeth is to get a set of porcelain veneers. Veneers are what give celebrities that “Hollywood” smile by giving your teeth a new thin covering. This new ultra-thin covering not only whitens teeth but also covers up imperfections like worn-down, uneven, gapped, and misaligned teeth.
